>> reporter: after vowing to release his full medical report, tonight, the republican donald trump instead offered up just this short note from his doctor, saying trump's physical strength and stamina are extraordinary. and in true trump fashion, the doctor declaring that, "if elected, mr. trump, i can state unequivocally, will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency." and now, the stage is set for a donald trump/ted cruz vegas showdown. trump's front-runner standing now facing a very real threat from the texas senator, who at a private fundraiser recently questioned the reality star's judgment. trump now on the attack. >> the way he's dealt with the senate, where he goes in there like a, you know, frankly like a little bit like a maniac. you can't walk into the senate and scream and call people liars and not be able to cajole and get along with people.

on the case tonight. >> reporter: when tashfeen malik came to the united states for the first time last year, she had already sent extensive messages online that she wanted to rage violent jihad. but none of that was known to the officials handling her fiance visa. >> during that time period, immigration officials were not allowed to use or view social media as a part of the screening process. >> reporter: former homeland security official john cohen, now an abc news consultant, says there was a secret policy that prevented officials from screening the social media posts of visa applicants, fearing bad public relations for the obama administration. >> the primary concern was that it would be viewed negatively if it was disclosed publicly, and there were concerns it would be embarrassing. >> reporter: malik, who had become radicalized after college, had three interviews, showed pictures of an engagement party in saudi arabia, and hervey is a was approved in three weeks, a process the state

failed. >> you know, obviously things went wrong. >> reporter: now, in the wake of the worst terror attack since 9/11, federal agents are reconstructing the online history of malik and her husband, syed farook. a history that shows even before they met, they were on the road to jihad, something authorities could have known, but did not, as she was welcomed to america. >> and brian ross back with us tonight. you've learned the white house now ordering a top to bottom review? >> reporter: that's right, david. and the review will include that policy that was secret until today, preventing officials from examining the social media posts of visa applicants. some 41,000 people came into this country last year on so-called fiance visas. >> brian, thank you. meantime, an isis-related arrest here at home tonight. a 30-year-old maryland man is charged with supporting isis.

wired him nearly $9,000 for the purposes of carrying out an attack on u.s. soil. the fbi says the suspect bought laptops and disposable cell phones. tonight, the suspect telling the fbi, he never intended to do any harm. and was it isis after all? there is a new headline tonight about that deadly crash of a russian passenger jet over egypt in october, killing all 224 on board. russian authorities saying a bomb brought it down. isis then releasing this image right here, claiming a bomb like this one, fashioned out of a soda can, was to blame. but tonight, egyptian investigators disputing those claims now, saying they have found no evidence of a terrorist act. back here at home tonight, and to the weather extremes across this country this evening. a major winter storm, 14 states on alert. and yet, the record heat elsewhere. look at this. in salt lake city, a blast of snow, trees crushing cars there. this man pushing his strabd nded vehicle.

in washington, d.c. tonight, the cherry blossoms are out. in new york city, christmas shopping in shorts. abc's gio benitez is in buffalo, new york, tonight, where he was one year ago, and what a >> reporter: tonight, a new storm pummeling the west. downing power lines in salt lake city. stranding drivers in washington state. high winds snapping trees in the bay area. >> she literally saw this tree just come down and she just heard it smash. >> reporter: all this after a wild weekend of extreme weather in the hartland. a kansas whiteout blinding drivers. and in texas, four confirmed tornadoes. you can see from the air, the path of destruction. at least 50 homes damaged. >> it sounded like the roof lifted off the house. >> reporter: our kendis gibson on the scene. >> here in lufkin, texas, 40 mile-per-hour winds did this, knocking over 64 freight train cars as if they were toys. >> reporter: meanwhile, the east, still waiting for winter.

last year. the temperature right now, it feels like 1 degree. and behind me, that is a car, completely buried in snow. and take a look at this spot right now. no snow. in fact, buffalo hit a record high today of 71 degrees. on december 14th. since the month began, more than 1,000 high temperatures tied or broken across the country. and tonight here at this ice rink, hundreds of people were expected on their skates, but just take a look. it looks more like a swimming pool. no skating here, david. >> what a difference, as we said, a year makes. gio, thank you. let's get right to ginger zee, because you are tracking the storm system, the heat and what it's going to look like come the holiday. >> reporter: all of it. let's follow. richmond, virginia. record high. from there, up to rochester, new york, the mild temperatures in place for most of the week in the area that you see highlighted there. then the jet stream relaxes into a somewhat more normal position.

10 to 30 degrees colder. but by next week when everybody is wanting a white house christmas, it does not look good. that jet blocks out the polar air. we stay above average. we're watching, too, that storm in the rockies, all the way through the northern plains. could see four to eight inches. lots of cold and wind. >> all right, ginger, thank you. in other news tonight, we turn now to a deadly police shooting in los angeles, fresh off the controversy in industry. some images of deadly confrontations there not released for more than a year. well, tonight, california authorities wasting no time releasing video from over the weekend. 33 rounds fired at the suspect, as the armed suspect appears to crawl away. they say he refused to drop his weapon, and abc's ryan owens with the sheriff tonight on why they released this tape so quickly. >> reporter: two los angeles county sheriff's deputies unleash 33 rounds at a man armed with a gun. most fired when he's already on the ground. here's 28-year-old nicholas

shooting. walking down a busy street with his gun, late saturday morning. >> he has a gun shooting straight in the air. >> reporter: the responding deputies repeatedly tell him to put the gun down, but that he refused. and as robertson walks toward a crowded gas station, they shooted. once he's on the ground, they keep firing. in response to the family and a few protesters, the sheriff here released this freeze frame. it shows robertson still had that gun in his hand, even when he was on the ground. still a threat, says the sheriff. >> felt that, you know, in the spirit of transparency, that the public had a right to know what we knew at that stage. >> reporter: releasing evidence like this in the middle of an ongoing investigation is risky business and the sheriff knows it, but he believes seeing that man on the ground, still with his gun in his hand may just change everything here. david? >> ryan owens with us tonight. ryan, thank you.

jury deliberations have now begun in the freddie gray case. the first of six officers charged. in connection with gray's death. whose spine was nearly severed after an alleged rough ride in the back of that police van. baltimore's mayor tonight calling for calm ahead of the veekt. there is word this evening, sergeant bowe bergdahl, the u.s. soldier who was held by the taliban for nearly five years after desserting his post in afghanistan, will face a court court-martial court-martial. bergdahl could face up to life in prison. we turn to a new headline tonight involving bill cosby, accused of sexually assaulting a growing list of women. some of their faces on that "new york magazine" cover, breaking their silence. well, now word tonight, cosby is striking back. countersuing seven of his accusers. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: bill cosby turning the tables tonight, saying he's the victim and filing a lawsuit against some of his accusers. >> we are taking steps in order

and the burden of proof is supposed to be on the people who are making the accusation, that the media hasn't required these accusers to have to do. >> reporter: the lawsuit, filed in massachusetts federal court, cosby is countersuing seven of the more than 50 women who've come forward accusing cosby of sexual assault, drugging or rape. these seven have all sued him for defamation, after he accused them of lying about the allegations. cosby's attorney accuses these mraf victims of malicious, opportunistic, false and defamatory accusations of sexual misconduct against him for their own financial gain. joe cammarata representing all seven women. >> my seven clients intend to vigorously proceed with their case. each one is confident that their good name and reputation will be restored at the end of the day. >> reporter: cosby's legal action comes to salvage what he can of his legacy comes the same day boston university announced it is taking away its honorary degree. one of more than a dozen institutions to do so in the
